An update from Marcy Baruch

Marcy Baruch is known for being quite the vocalist around Colorado. It wasn't easy but we caught up with her hectic schedule to see what she has planned. Apparently since "Clearly" she's been writing, playing and making a splash in the singer/songwriter scene. We sat down and asked her a few questions so that you will know what the heck is going on with her.

So I hear that your spring schedule is kinda insane, wanna tell us more about it?

Marcy Baruch - I love spring and yes, there is a lot on the horizon. I think the “insane” part of it is actually going to be quite the adventure. In April, I’m going back to Philadelphia, where I grew up, to do a show at a great club called The Point. Robin (my dear friend and manager) and I are calling it our Thelma and Louise tour. We’re driving out together over 4 days and doing house concerts along the way each night. One in Chicago, one in Omaha, one in Dubuque, Iowa…We realized we both know a lot of people between here and there! On our drive back, we’ll do the same but probably go up through New York and then head west again. We’re still working out that part of it.

What are the dates you have coming up so we can go see you preform?

Marcy Baruch - This Thursday, March 6th, I’ll be playing in the Swallow Hill café from 7:30-9:00. The following Wednesday, March 12th, I’ll be up at Archer’s in Fort Collins . On Saturday, March 15th, I’ll be teaming up with a wonderful Seattle artist named Willow for a House Concert and then on Sunday, March 30th, I’ll be playing at The Impulse Theater. In April I’ll be Headlining a show with an event called “Delicious,” playing at recently re-opened club called “Somewhere Else” and doing a few other TBA shows before and after my trip back east.

You’re teaming up will Jill Stevenson a bit... what other artists do you really enjoy playing with?

Marcy Baruch - Celeste Krenz is one artist with whom I have enjoyed working. She’s moved to Nashville, but while she was here, I added harmonies on her Christmas CD and also in a couple of shows. More recently, I’ve so been enjoying playing with Melanie Susuras. She’s very open to collaboration, which is something I love. At my last show at The Dove, I joined her during her set for three songs, adding harmonies that we’d worked out. During my set, she came up too and we did a rendition of Gilian Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” We’ll be doing more collaboration at The Impulse Theater on March 30th, where she, Jill Stevenson and I will be giving a Songwriter in the round show.

Any new material since "Clearly" or any new recordings on the horizon? Who makes up your band anyway? They sound great!

Marcy Baruch - I’ve written a lot of new material since “Clearly.” I’m excited about a new song called “Like This” which the band is working up. It’s very catchy with a huge build up into the chorus, a great hook etc. It’s got many components of a really good song and deals with a subject that isn’t quite cut and dry, but that begs for some exploration. A lot of the new material is coming from the perspective of other people’s shoes or looking at accepted conclusions about different characters and then looking at them from the flip side. As far as the band goes, it’s a different crew now than what was on the CD with the exception of my bass player, Scott Surine. Two other incredible musicians have joined up with me, Terry Hansen on guitars and vocals and Chad Johnson on drums. The four of us make up the core, with other players such as Anthony Salvo (fiddle and soprano sax) and Ed Contreras (percussion) joining us from time to time. A new recording is on the horizon, hopefully emerging in summer or early fall.

I asked Passion to review your CD and she was really impressed. Think you'll take her advice and unleash a little fury? (it's posted in her section)

Marcy Baruch - Wow, what a nice review!!! THANKS PASSION! She’s inspired me. I have a few black boot pictures of my own. Perhaps I’ll have to send them her way? Fury—yes. I have more rawness in me. I play it safe too often, despite the diversity of styles, tempos and subject matter. I will remember her words and provoking in my next project, truly. Sometimes it takes someone reminding me of how much more I can stretch in order to throw myself into a different realm of expression.

What's this Invention I keep hearing about?

Marcy Baruch - The Slip On Pocket! It is a woman’s best friend and I am never without mine. Because of it, a woman never has to carry a purse again, unless she wants to, or ask someone to hold her “few little things” in a coat pocket. The Slip On Pocket is basically a beautiful lace pocket on an adjustable garter that a woman can wear on her thigh, lower leg or upper arm. It is big enough to carry the essentials—ID, credit card, cash, house key, lipstick—but still very discreet and so convenient. Two women at DU, Kristin Merkel and Lindsey Scholl, invented it, Alex Teitz of FEMMUSIC told me about it, and before you know it, I came up with a version that I love called the Signature Series. It’s gold with black lace and available at my shows and on my website.

Anything about the inner thigh I want to learn more about!! Where can we find out more?

Marcy Baruch - I probably can’t tell you anything about the inner thigh that you don’t already know, but for more information about the Slip On Pocket, you can go to the Merchandise page of my website, www.marcybaruch.com

Great to talk to you Marcy, anything else you'd like to say to your new or loyal fans?

Marcy Baruch - Nice talking to you too, Josh. Thanks for having me. To my new and loyal fans, all I can say is Thank You. I think the best part of creation lies in sharing it and I wish for every person to find a place where his or her voice can connect with passion and truth, where it has the greatest chance of being received by other people who will then be inspired to find their own and contribute positively within a very broken world. It’s a cycle that I believe is very important.
